New stuff

June 28   Two photos of a silver-spotted skipper butterfly.

A literary agent suggested that 90,000 would be a better max length for my fantasy novel, so I cut 16,000 words, and now I have two versions of the same novel. Should I mention both in a future query letter?
21   Today features bald eagles: A page from the paddle at BESP on June 19 and some further eagle photos on my birding pages.

I wonder how the Iranian election will be resolved? It's certainly a rare demonstration of people power - but will it last?
14   Two more for my birding series: a red-shouldered hawk and red-winged blackbird. Soft but striking: a red-spotted purple butterfly.

I'm still behind on what I'd like to accomplish. Right now I'm preparing a full synopsis of my recently completed fantasy novel. Also, last week's paddle across the lake to visit the eagle family at BESP was canceled because of rain, but it has been rescheduled for next week.
7   Soft but striking: a red-spotted purple butterfly.

A mute swan stopped at the Toftrees Pond for several days in May.

I almost got it together to put up a page on the story reading (from last February), but I fell a little behind on the freelancing this week. Perhaps next week? Of course, the next paddle to visit the bald eagles at BESP will be a distraction (that is, a good distraction).
May 31   The highlight of yesterday was an evening paddle across the lake in Bald Eagle State Park to visit the bald eagle family.

My story "Mr. Starman" has been accepted for publication in the anthology Cheer Up, Universe. Whooppee!
24   There are some bird families for which although I've good photos, I never seem to get around to posting them. Today I decided to catch up on sandpipers, and so here are least sandpiper and spotted sandpiper photos.

My current fantasy story is halfway through Critters, and as a consequence of remarks, the rewrite (when I have time off from freelancing) may make it longer than I had originally intended.
17   Photos of the eastern kingbird perching and in flight

I finished my second story (a fantasy), and now it's time to concentrate on freelancing.
10   Three photos of hooded mergansers

Book production freelancing has finally started in a large way. I hope to finish one or two stories before concentrating on the freelancing. Actually, one is kind of finished (and being discussed on Critters). The second is more questionable, but I hope to get through the first draft.
4   I decided to transfer the SFWA membership logo to the bottom of this page, rather than my sparse opening page. Somehow, that makes more sense to me.
3   Spring blossoms are a pleasure, and here are two "soft" magnolia blossom photos.

New information on the banded snow geese I had photographed in March.
April 22   A couple of weeks ago, Robyn Graboski asked whether I'd like to photograph the Wild About Animals exhibition in the Penn State Ag Arena. Of course I said yes (good karma comes from helping a wildlife rehabiliator). Then she mentioned a little video would be good too. And so my old digit-8 camcorder went to work. As a result, I have over 60 photos and 5 video clips spread across 15 pages from the April 11 event.
19   Centre County PAWS, in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Psi, held its first Walk-A-Thon on April 18, 2009, and I've included a brief photojournal of the event.
9   The next weekend will be busy, so I thought to put up a page today, featuring two alternatives about an encounter between a gopher snake, a petroglyph of a snake, and me: the video (2.2 megs) or the stills

I have finished revising my present fantasy novel, and it's ready to go out into the world. Now comes the hard part, because anyone can write a novel. But market it . . . ? That's work.
5   Snow goose photos with a difference: individuals instead of group scenes
Mar. 29   Photographs of a tundra swan and two snow geese wearing bands
22   Here's a slight change of pace from snow geese, all because Sue and I met a Redhead.
15   More snow geese! This time it's a sequence of three photos of the swarming that mirror the action of my goosestorm video clip.
14   On March 12, a hacker rewrote the html files to my site with useless code. Today I noticed and uploaded all my files again, so everything should be back to normal. I apologize about the inconvenience for the past two days, and I hope the hacker finds a more fulfilling life doing something else.
8   Two videos from last Sunday's trip to Middle Creek: the flyby and the goosestorm. They're large files (3.8 and 15.3 megs, respectively), but they show goose action at its best. The goosestorm has multiple swarms starring a goodly number of the over 80,000 snow geese at Middle Creek that day.
2   On Wednesday and Sunday I went to Middle Creek for the snow geese, and it was wonderful. Here's the first of what will be more pages on snow geese. It's a larger image (over 200K) than I'd typically choose, but it's necessary to capture the intensity of a snow goose swarm.
Feb. 23   In honor of winter (or what's left of it), here are two icicle photos: columns and bridge
17   Last Thursday was the reading of my story and three others from the Town & Gown fiction issue, and it was glorious! All four actors did brilliant jobs and brought an incredible amount of life into each story. The actor who read mine - Charles Dumas - has an account of the event on his blog at the Centre Daily Times.
(Writing success doesn't mean that my photos stop.) An evening guest: an opossum
