New Stuff

August 29   August is butterfly month. I've never seen such a variety before. Today, here's the striking white admiral.
22   How to be happy: Nature's secret revealed
    My new novel is progressing.
Incidentally, I've been posting more photos on Facebook, although the best of them will probably also be here. Probably.
15   Small and striking: Ailanthus webworm moth. And a small butterfly: Common sootywing
8   Continuing my tiny theme, here are four large portraits of damselflies, photographs of flying needles, so to say.
1   August begins with some photos of a tiny, tiny and beautiful butterfly: the least skipper.
Cheerful news: I received, signed, and returned a contract for Space and Time to publish my fantasy "The Inadvertent Wizard."

July 27   A anew bird for me from the Toftrees game land: a blue-gray gnatcatcher.
Am I ever falling behind! For instance, the anthology Belong has received some good reviews for which I should post links.
18   A week later than I had intended, but here is my review of Philomena's Homecoming, an incredible children's book suitable for both young and old and anyone in between.
11   Continuing with my documentation of local birds (and I never imagined my list would grow so long), here is the barn swallow by Toftrees pond (they didn't have a handy barn).
5   I skipped the fireworks this year (too hot to go trekking with tripod, chair, camera, etc.), but here are some pretty wildflower blossoms of a coltsfoot
Or perhaps you'd like to relax with a great-spangled fritillary enjoying delicious thistle nectar?

June 27   On June 17, Sue and I participated in the second paddle across the lake at Bald Eagle State Park to visit the bald eagle family.
Yes, I missed posting a page last week. I had become caught up in working on one freelance editing project in order to begin another. The second project has disappeared, so I may have more time next week to put up an extra page. I hope. Freelancing is anything but predictable.
13   Friday evening was the first of two paddles across the lake at Bald Eagle State Park to visit the bald eagle family there.
Not interested in bald eagles? What about a pretty photo of the butterfly Pearl Crescent?
6   The yellow-billed cuckoo is a handsome bird that helps keep tent caterpillar populations in check.
Today and yesterday I watched the agility trials of the Nita Nee Kennel Club. Amazing. I've never seen so many well-controlled, well-behaved, and talented dogs before. The handlers were pretty good too.

May 30   Don't Mess with Mom: Earlier in the week, I had come across three mom common snapping turtles who were busy nesting.
23   I had a choice of several different subjects for a page, but yesterday I was impressed by a green heron fishing for lunch.
Since learning of Harry Dunbar's death, I wanted to put up a selection of his favorite pages from Dunbar on Black Books, which is now - at last - ready.
16   Spring is rushing by, and I've a backlog of birds and flowers that I'd like to add; for now, however, let me show two beautiful butterflies: American Lady and Red Admiral.
I've had a fantasy story accepted by Space and Time this week. Once I receive the contract, I'll add more info.
9   About twenty or so species of warblers come through State College in the spring. The yellow warbler is one of those that stay during the warm weather.
This is the weekend of the AAUW Used Book Sale, one of the largest on the East Coast. Talk about good fun! Add that to the reasons why I love State College.
5   The American bittern on a rare visit to State College
So what happened to April? The beginning of the month was fun, inasmuch as I photographed the Wild About Animals event (thus pages are finished; I'm waiting for final approval before showing them). Afterward I became caught up with a rush assignment and the flu. But life is now returning to normal, or as normal as it can ever hope to be.

Apr. 4   I had a grand time over at the 11th Wild About Animals event at the State College Ag Arena, and am in the process of sorting through hundreds of photos to put on a good web display of the event. Maybe by next weekend . . . ? Of course, I'd prefer to finish earlier. (In the meantime, last year's WAA is here.)
In the meantime, for the sake of having something new, several days ago I had a close encounter with an osprey, and my best osprey flight photos were the result.

Mar. 28   Today's new page includes two of my favorite snow goose photos.
The past several days have been one happy surprise after another because my family has discovered me. I now have several cousins and an aunt - all great people!
Belong, the Australian SF anthology has been published. I've more information about it on my bibliography. Or you can go to the blog of editor Russell B. Farr for a detailed account of stories, story selection, and authors.
A modest proposal to end big government in the US: Cut the senate in half; that is, have fifty senators (one per state) instead of a hundred. The new senate would be as inept as ever, but we'd be paying for fewer of them.
23   I've started adding cover images in my bibliography; they add a pleasing splash of color.
21   A few days ago I received an email from Jakub Jasinski, who photographed snow goose 45AX on the 17th. With his kind permission, I'm using his beautiful photo with my banded snow geese (toward the bottom).
Harry Dunbar, a scholar and writer, passed away in 2006, a fact which I only learned of recently. I'm updating my pages about him, beginning with an obituary written by his family.
14   Snow goose fun continues with a series of photos of individual blue snow geese.
I've updated my bibliography with the publication of "Barbara Bloodbath" (a fantasy), or you can visit Space and Time direct.
11   The snow geese celebration continues with an 80-second clip of a massive swarm. At 8 megs, having basic DSL or a cable modem is recommended.
10   The first of this year's snow geese video clips: A brief swarm (16 seconds)
8   Sue and I went to Middle Creek for the annual snow goose gathering on their spring migration. To begin, I've two photos: snow geese on ice and the beginning of a great swarm
