Wood FrogApril 2005

On April 1, while ice still covered many of the small ponds in the game land behind Cooper's Pond (State College, PA), frogs began their choruses.

The following wood frog was the first I had seen. He splashed twice before posing.

Following is a Flash image if you'd like to hear an early spring frog chorus.

The high-pitched tones are the spring peepers (tiny treefrogs); in the background you'll hear the lower voice of the wood frog, who sounds like a drunk duck.

Photography note: The photos were taken with a Pentax *istD and the SMC 400-600mm lens.
