Red-Tailed HawkNovember 2005

Some days I'd drive for miles and miles to try for a decent photo of a raptor. On Friday, 11 November 2005, the following red-tailed hawk popped up over the stand of trees that separates Cooper's Pond from game land 176. (I was on the game land side, returning after a walk.)

I figure the redtail must have been only a couple of hundred feet from where our feeders are, so perhaps he or she was cruising around admiring the local mourning doves.

Red-tailed hawks are among the more common raptors, but they're remarkable beautiful. This one was a mature adult since (from another photo) the back of his tail was quite red. Sometimes the red shows through the underside on a bright day.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 400-600mm reflex, for the two photos, part of a longer series.
