Dragonfly
An Eastern Pondhawk

Erythemis simplicicollis
July 31, 2011

One of the advantages of the web is the ability to identify what would have been next to impossible for me (that is, a green dragonfly). Thus here we have an eastern pondhawk (Erythemis simplicicollis), a modest-size dragonfly with a robust appetite.

The female is the green pondhawk; the male eastern pondhawk is light blue.

Pondhawks are voracious pest hunters, which makes them a great dragonfly to have around.

Photo note: Both photos were taken in the Toftrees game land on July 15, 2011. The first with the Pentax K20D and the Pentax SMC-DA 55-300mm lens and the second with the same camera and the Voigtlander 125mm macro lens.
