Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

The painted lady (Vanessa cardui) is a strikingly beautiful medium size butterfly.

I don't see it as often as the American lady, but that's the difference between the painted lady having one brood a year and the American lady having several.

The most easily noted difference between the painted lady and the American lady is that the former has four "eyes" on the lower hind wing, whereas the American lady has two large eyes.

The following photo, although at an angle, shows the painted lady's four eyes (along the outside of the hind wing).

Thus far, all my painted lady photos are during August.

Photo note: I used the Pentax K20D during 2012 for these three photos.
