Wood Duck Stampede
From Pond to Sky
June 2008

On wet years, the Toftrees pond (between the Toftrees golf course and the game land) has a small overflow area, where Sue and I surprised (unintentionally) a wood duck family: mom and about a dozen ducklings.

On catching sight of us, Mom wood duck immediately began whistling her alarm call. Then she stood aside to make sure her ducklings were retreating in good formation.

Once the ducklings were on the move, Mom wood duck continued her alarm call and joined the race.

Parent and ducklings were all splashing at great speed right before the reeds.

And then they were hidden. It was as if there weren't a single duck for miles around.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *istD, with the SMC 1000mm reflex, at the end of May 2008 for these photos.
