Eastern Comma
Polygonia comma
June 19, 2011

Here's another butterfly that should be held dear by writers and editors: the eastern comma (Polygonia comma).

Actually, anyone would enjoy seeing the eastern comma (a medium-size butterfly), as its upper wing colors are beautiful and striking.

Eastern comma, wings open

It's under the wing that the eastern comma's secret appears: a silver crescent in the shape of a comma.

Eastern comma, wings up, comma visible

The comma's comma can be seen a little left of center.

Photo note: I used the Pentax K20D, with the Sigma 150-500mm lens for the first photo and the Pentax SMC-DA 55-300mm lens for the second, taken in April and June, respectively.
