I had come across years ago, and then last year and this year, I've had a number of encounters with variegated fritillaries, which I value highly.
The backlight here highlights the colors while not disrupting the below-wing pattern. |

This year, a variegated fritillary came to a butterfly bush in my backyard, but I've had the most photo luck with them at the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden.
